In case you don’t know who Susan Carland is, she’s a Muslim woman and academic who’s half of “Australia’s Power Couple” along with her talk-show host husband Waleed Aly. They’re known as the Australian Brangelina and despite their success and loyal following, they have a ton of haters.
Carland decided to turn all the vicious messages she gets on Twitter into something good: for every hate tweet she receives, she’s donating $1 to UNICEF.
The kinds of messages she gets range from making fun of her hijab, wishing for her death, and accusing her of “planning to take over the nation, one halal meat pie at a time,” she said in an piece in the Sydney Morning Herald.
Her idea is an effort to “drive darkness away with light,” and so far it’s working because since she started in October she’s raised over $1,000.
Carland said she “tried blocking, muting, engaging and ignoring,” but felt like she should be “actively generating good in the world for every ugly verbal bullet sent [her] way.”
While it’s unclear if the haters have backed off, Carland has been getting a lot of tweets of support since she announced her plan.
“Good and evil are not equal. Repel evil with what is better.”
