Look in your pantry for the ingredients for simple, effective beauty recipes that will have you glowing like a goddess.
1. The humble pea
Chickpea flour, also known as gram flour or besan, is one of Indian women’s most popular beauty secrets. This versatile product can be used with milk, yogurt, honey, sugar or rose water to soften and exfoliate the skin.
2. Pearl of the Orient
The Chinese take advantage of the medicinal benefits of green tea for protection against wrinkles and age spots. Green tea’s most active ingredients are flavanols, polyphenols and epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG), which contains between 25 to 100 times the antioxidant power of vitamins C and A.
3. The verdant forest
The Malays believe the face is a reflection of the body. A fresh complexion is believed to indicate a well-balanced mind, body and spirit. Their beauty ingredients include ginger, turmeric, piper betel and henna leaves. Harvested from tropical rainforests, they contain vitamins, minerals, enzymes and other compounds that detoxify the body, purify the blood and promote circulation.
4. Liquid gold
The Portuguese have an age-old beauty secret — olive oil. Applied to the skin, hair and nails, it is an excellent moisturizer. Olive oil contains the antioxidant vitamin E, which combats free radicals in the environment that can cause saggy skin and wrinkles. Olive oil is also rich in squalene, an emollient that penetrates the skin without leaving a greasy film.
Chickpea facial exfoliant
2 teaspoon chickpea flour, ¼ teaspoon turmeric powder, 3 teaspoon milk
Mix the flour and turmeric, then add the milk and mix. Use as a scrub on the face and neck, then rinse with warm water.
Olive oil moisturising face mask
1 teaspoon olive oil, 1 teaspoon honey, 1 egg yolk
Mix the ingredients until well combined and apply to the face. Leave for 15 minutes, then rinse with warm water.
Olive oil nail treatment
3 teaspoon olive oil, 1 teaspoon lemon juice
Warm up the olive oil with the lemon juice. Soak nails in mixture for 10 minutes.
Green tea oil-controlling face mask
1 green tea bag, 1/3 cup water, 1 teaspoon rice flour
Steep the tea bag in hot water for 10 minutes, add flour and stir into a paste. Apply to skin and let it set for 15 minutes. Wash off with warm water, then splash skin with cold water to tighten pores.
